Spring is getting closer and it is this time of year that I start thinking about all the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ projects that I have got lined up for the year. I love the idea of completely modifying a room or building an extension onto my home while my wife on the other hand does not like the thought of all the noise and dust caused by my power tools and hammer.

My wife and I have made a compromise. If I will take two weeks off to visit with her parents (a daunting task at best) then I get the freedom (as a reward) to pull the house to pieces and put it all back together in a new shape or form. Okay, so it’s not quite as simple as that but the one thing that we do both agree on is how nice the finished item is going to look. To make sure that we both get what we want, we both sit down and decide on the types of building materials that I’ll be using.

Building Materials can easily make or break your D-I-Y project. If you don’t use the correct building material then the chances are very good that the end result will not be what you originally intended it to be. That said, you also don’t need to spend an arm or a leg getting hold of building supplies as long as know how to work with them and accept the limitations of your skills. If you buy very expensive kitchen tiles, for example, but you don’t have a clue how to install them properly, the cost of the materials might as well have been thrown down the toilet since the end result will look terrible.

The most important thing to start with is a clear vision of what you want the end product to look like and then choose the quality building materials that you need to make your goal a reality. Not all D-I-Y projects are the same, some will only need some small ‘quick fixes’ or alterations whilst others might be more extensive like new kitchen cupboards, installing new plasterboard etc. Both projects need attention to detail and neither leave room for any error and in both cases, the incorrect building materials will result in disaster.

Many of the larger retail stores that sell building materials will, more often than not, have staff that can help you choose the correct building material for the job. They might even be able to show you how to use the materials properly.
