Replacing The Broken Sprinkler Pipe

A broken sprinkler pipe can leak gallons of water every day and cost you lots of money. It can also cause a loss of water pressure to your sprinkler heads, as well as cause water damage to foundations, or other structures in the immediate area.

Turning it off can be done by either turning off the water supply to the house at the city meter or shutting down the shut off valve connected to the sprinkler. Dig around the area where you believe the broken pipe is. This is usually the area where water is bubbling up. Next take a hack saw and saw a straight edge on either side of the cracked PVC pipe. Remove the broken pipe. Sand the ends with sandpaper to get rid of the rough edge, this also helps to keep the area clean and ready for priming/gluing.

Measure the broken piece and cut a replacement section from the new pipe. Compare your new pipe to make sure that it will fit into the gap. Dry fit the connector sleeves onto the new section and install it on the existing pipe to verify the fit.

Having, acquired the exact pipe length that is needed, coat it completely with the PVC primer. Allow the set up to dry completely.

Once the primer has dried, apply a coat of PVC glue to the inside of the connectors and the outside of the pipe ends. Assemble the new pipe by installing the connectors to the new section and then installing the new section in the gap left in the existing pipe. Push the sections together to ensure a tight fit. You will want to work quickly, as the glue dries in a short amount of time.

Allow the glue to dry according to the directions on the package. Once the new section is completely dry, turn on the water and check for leaks.

If the diameter of your house plumbing is half inch then it is quite obvious that it would cause the problem of low water pressure. If you would use pipes with 1 inch diameter then this problem can be avoided to a great extent as smaller pipes produce lower water pressure than large sized pipes.

Hence, it is always recommended to use larger sized pipes than small sized pipes. No doubt it will cost you more but it is worth spending. Water travels from the main water supply down the pipe and then passes via many twists and turns before reaching the desired valve. In all this traveling, the pressure of water naturally goes down and if you are using smaller diameter of pipes then it will put more restrictions on the water flow.

The reduction in water pressure could also be caused because of many other reasons. In case the shut off valves are not completely opened then it could also result in low water pressure. So check all the shut off valves in case of low water pressure problem.

Also check the indoor main water shut off valve. This valve should also be opened fully. In case it is situated on or near your main water meter, you should call a plumber or the water provider to get the valve opened.

If all the valves are open and you still have reduced water pressure then there might be damage to your pipe somewhere along the line. If you live in an earthquake prone area then the pipes may have been damaged during a strong earthquake. You will need to have your pipes inspected for damage or even leaks.

A blockage or a leak in the system might also cause water pressure reduction. You might also notice a larger than normal water bill if there is a leak in your water system.

Most people call a plumber only in case of an emergency. But if you act before a crisis, you can save both time and money. Reduced water pressure could be a sign of a serious plumbing problem so have it looked at as soon as possible.
