What Herb Garden Plants Are Right For You

Research is key if you are interested in taking up any new hobby and that includes herb gardening. There are many, many different types of herbs out there and each one is different and has different requirements for successful growing. The plants, some in perennials and others are biennials and whether you’re interested in a class of herbs or a specific herb, you will need to understand what is needed to ensure it gets the care it needs to grow into a healthy plant. This article will help you, and give you an understanding of what types of herbs are out there and what they are used for.

Basil, cilantro and summer savory are all annuals. These plants will not survive frost and every year, they need to be planted from a small seed or plant. Sage and winter savory are perennials which return every year and are able to survive in colder temperatures. Parsley, angelica and caraway are biennial herbs. These herbs do best when sown directly into a garden in the late spring. They from leaves in their first growing, flowers and seed in their second season and then they die.

Herbs used in cooking are the ones most familiar to us. These are called culinary herbs, and they often have strong flavours. Usually the stronger flavoured herbs are sparingly to various foods. Parsley is an herb that we recognize mostly as a garnish. It is that little sprig of green on the side of your plate. Aromatic herbs are the herbs we know for their pleasing fragrance. The oils from herbs like mint or rosemary or lovage are often used for perfumes, toilet water and other scents. Parts of these aromatic herbs can be used in a dry form to scent your linens or clothing. These herbs are the ones you find dried and used as potpourri. Lavender and lemon verbena is two herbs that make sweet smelling potpourri. There are also herbs that are considered to be medicine. Traditional medicine has declared that herbs cure the body. Medical knowledge recognizes some of these herbs to be beneficial for your health. Proceed cautiously, however, because some herbs are dangerous when ingested.

Growing herbs for their visual properties is also a reason to grow herb garden plants. Chicory have light or brightly coloured flowers, valerian have whitish or light coloured flowers. Also lavender has a soft purple coloured flower. These are just an example of a few plants with great dec orative beauty.

Many herbs have many uses. They may not just be placed under one catergory. Cooking, Tea, Decorative or even Medicine. Lavander is very decorative but also gives off a lovely smell and is used in many pot porruies and even scented to many house hold cleaners. It all depends on what you want from your herbs to which one’s you will decide to grow or purchase.
