Take a walk through your local grocery store and you will be shocked at the price of organic produce these days. So it’s no wonder that more people like yourself are deciding to till up the ground in their yard, and grow their own. Not only will you save loads of money but if you can get a large enough harvest you can also sell some, or give them away to friends.

Your first big pointer is to take a little bit of time to learn how the ph scale works. Then after that is done, pick up a soil ph test kit, and learn how to use it. Adding fertilizer to your soil always brings with it some acidity, so you need to pick up a big bag of lawn lime or what is also called dolomite, and learn how to use it to bring up the ph level of your soil.

Your second gardening pointer is to learn about and give careful consideration to installing a drip irrigation system in your garden. Now the first big benefit of these systems is that they don’t flood the soil. Rather the water soaks in gradually. This is turn prevents the oxygen from being forced out, and also leads to more even nutrient distribution.

Your third tip is to give your plants a good “head start” by planting them in cups of soil in a green house, or even indoors under a grow-light. Now the nice thing about starting them indoors is that you can set your light timer to duplicate the midsummer growing season, even though it’s early spring outdoors. It also helps to bake your potting soil fist to kill of pest eggs.

Your fourth tip is to not go crazy selecting “exotics” when you’re buying your vegetable seeds. It’s just so easy to do these days to because so many are available online. Now they look delicious on the seed package but many of them can be problematic to grow, and they also may not suit your growing climate. Stick to the proven easy classics at first.

Your fifth tip is if you’re limited for space and hoping to see as much as you possibly can get come out of a small plot of land then use a nice high quality mulching product. Now peat-moss works great because it’s cellular in its makeup, but it can be a bit costly. Just the same though, if you can afford it, your soil will be nice and fluffy for many seasons.

Orchid growing is a great hobby for those who appreciate Mother Nature’s beauty and grace. While enjoying orchids’ extravagant beauty, one may think it’s impossible to grow them indoors. However, nowadays a wide range of orchid species and hybrids as well as availability of orchid growing supply stores gives anyone a chance to nurture these amazing flowers at home. But don’t get me wrong, it does take some patience and love, no wonder an orchid has been a symbol of commitment and love for centuries.

The first task of your orchid growing project would be obtaining an orchid growing guide for beginners. You are going to deal with some questions and issues along the way such as: How do I grow orchids indoors? How to get an orchid to bloom? How do I pollinate an orchid? Where do I get orchid pests products? And this is where your book will come in handy.

The following four components of home orchid growing play a crucial role in the success of your project:

1. Soil. Wait, let’s call it an orchid growing medium. Why? Because in most cases, it can be anything but soil or dirt. Many species of orchids do not need soil to take root in, they grow in sand, pebbles, or even on tree trunks. Some orchids thrive when attached to a piece of bark or cork. You can also use commercial growing mediums made from bark, charcoal or volcanic rock.

2. Lighting. Lighting requirements vary from species to species however, most orchid plants need some shade as direct sunlight can burn orchid flowers and leaves. On the other hand, if there is not enough light, you may never see your orchid blossom. You will need to maintain a perfect balance of light and shade to be able to enjoy your orchid plant to the fullest. With the introduction of more manageable light sources such as fluorescent and LED “grow lights” this “balancing” task has been much simplified.

3. Temperature. The average temperature requirements for the orchids are about 60-70 F. Some of them will do just fine in a little cooler or hotter environment. But keep in mind, the orchids should never be exposed to freezing or too high temperatures.

4. Watering. Although the orchids require plenty of water, they never tolerate being soaked for a lengthy time. Too much water can cause fungus growth that will eventually kill the plant. You need to make sure that the orchid growing medium allows the excess water to drain through.

There are more than 30,000 orchid species and hundreds of thousands of its hybrids. The above orchid growing tips have been provided as a general review only, as the needs of orchid plants vary from species to species. Always consult the nursery professionals and your orchid growing guide to ensure successful orchid growing experience.
