A Guide To Planting A Rose Garden
Healthy rose gardens start before you set a single plant in the ground. The ground itself is the first determining factor in whether or not your roses will be healthy. Prepare the soil, preferably with a well-drained loam, with an added layer of organic matter on top. Gardening experts also recommend adding three pounds of super-phosphate per 100 square feet, then mixing with the soil down about twelve inches. Home gardening doesn’t have to be complicated, but you need to follow the right steps in the beginning to create the perfect garden.
Set the rose plants with plenty of room among them for becoming wide and lush, with lots of blooms, as compared with restricting them so they get spindly and tall. Floribundas, hybrid teas and grandifloras should be about 18 to 30 inches distant, whereas miniatures can be spaced one foot apart. You might plant any of these a bit nearer to each other if you’re planning to make a rose hedge, but if you would like each bush to flourish by itself, then extra space is critical. The air passage will also help to avoid the formation of mold in your roses.
Not all types of roses arrive in a garden the same way, nor are they planted in rose gardens by exactly the same means. Container plants, for example, are relatively easy to plant, just being tipped from the container and put into the ground. Bare root plants, on the other hand, those with just roots and a few naked canes, need quick planting before foliage starts growing. They also need protecting for about three weeks with an eight inch cone of soil built around them. And boxed roses, without the cardboard, should be planted similarly.
General planting time for rose gardens is early spring, especially for bare root plants. Container roses that have a great deal of root development already can be planted right up to early fall. But certainly any planting needs to be done after the danger of the last frost of spring.
Prepare the soil properly, take care with the spacing in your garden design, and plant your roses where they will get full sun for most of the day. Do all of this and you’ll have given your plants a very good start in life.
